Yoga Bae AKA Britteny is a Yoga Instructor from the San Francisco area. She specializes in a somewhat alternative yoga practice to create an inclusive and fun space. I have been following her on social media for a while and saw that she was hosting a class here in Atlanta and decided to go. I can count on my fingers the number of times I have been to a yoga class, but I was intrigued about what she had to offer, since she hosted “Trap Yoga” here in Atlanta a month or two ago in conjunction with the rapper 2Chainz for his album release.
When the class started and you first hear Britteny open her mouth, you immediately feel at ease. As someone who identifies with a black and urban upbringing, I was excited. She is fun, well-spoken, and has a potty mouth, all things I am totally here for. I was hooked. Don’t get me wrong though, the shit is HARD. She took the class through a (somewhat) traditional vinyasa yoga sequence, as trap music blared in the background. She demonstrated the moves and at the end she put her twist on it.
The class made me emotional, to be honest. It was amazing the energy you could feel in the room, the unity and sheer positivity that radiated from the ladies (and one gentleman) who took the class I went to. I began to think about self-care in the holistic sense. Personally, I am wound up like a twisted rubber band 24/7. I pretty much snap at the drop of a dime. I don’t want to be like that. I’m sure I am not alone in this. I don’t ever just RELEASE. I don’t know if yoga is definitely something I want to pursue, but it did help open the door to exploring what I do need to be OK.
I definitely recommend the class. It was great. If she is in your city, GO. You won’t regret it!
