My Skin Faves

As I’ve gotten older I’ve gotten more serious about hair and skincare. It’s a big deal. Your skins is your bodies largest organ, so it, along with your hair and nails are your bodies biggest telltales for any health related issues. Here are a few tips and products I use to keep my skin clear and hair healthy.

Vitamins and minerals are important to your health in general, but if you are deficient in any of them, it can show up on your skin as blemishes, dryness, or redness. It can also show up in your hair as dryness, or hair loss.

I’ve been taking Beautysil’s Hair and Nails supplement for a few months now and I have noticed that my hair is a lot longer and thicker then it has been (for a while it didn’t seem to be growing). You take one pill once a day.

The only other supplement I currently take is the Womens Daily Raw One by Garden of Life. It’s food based, meaning that the vitamins and minerals were derived from plants instead of man-made sources, so it’s easier for your body to absorb and doesn’t contain some of the icky chemicals that a lot of multivitamins do. This particular multivitamin also contains pro-biotics for digestion, and super-food extracts.

I usually take them both with my first meal of the day that includes fat for optimal absorption. A lot of vitamins and mineral are fat-soluble so your body won’t properly absorb them without some sort of fat. Another option is to take them with a spoonful of nut butter or an oil of your choice. 

Nutrition and Hydration

What you eat is super important. Eating is your bodies best way to absorb those vitamins and minerals in a way that’s optimal for you. Having a balanced healthy diet consisting of healthy carbs, fats, and protein goes a long way. Water is also important. Staying hydrated helps to flush toxins from your body and keep your skin cells nourished. Cutting down on sugar and alcohol will also help to keep you from being dehydrated.

Skincare Routine

Proper skincare is important as well. We are exposed to so many different chemicals and pollutants in the air around us, not to mention the sun. It’s super important to moisturize your skin in the morning. Moisturizing creates a protective barrier on your skin to help keep some of those toxins out. Since it’s winter I currently use coconut or jojoba oil to moisturize my face, since it tends to get really dry. In the spring and summer I use a lighter moisturizer and an SPF.

At night you have to wash your face. Washing removed all the impurities that have accumulated on your face during the day, as well as makeup, sweat, and grime. I use natural products on my face 99% of the time, and I don’t wear makeup very often. I think just letting my skin be has really kept it clear and blemish free.

Image result for dr bronners liquidI wash my face with Dr. Bronners liquid castile soaps, they all smell good and are made with natural ingredients. There are many to chose from. My favorite is the peppermint, but I’m currently using the hemp rose scent. They also come in unscented if you have sensitive skin. I just use a couple drops with water and rinse. Super easy!

After I was my face, if I have any bumps or breakouts, I follow up with tea tree oil pads. My favorite is from Trader Joes. Desert Essence also has some, either one is good. Tea tree oil is an antibacterial so it will kill germs that can cause blemishes naturally. The smell is pretty strong, but it disappears quickly. I know a lot of people don’t like it, but I love the smell!

Bonus:Once a week or so, I use a mask on my t-zone. I have oily skin and large pores in that area, so clay or charcoal masks are good for pulling out oil and tightening your pores. Skip this if you have dry skin.
