Self-Care September: How I Spent Labor Day Weekend

Self-care is so important, yet so under-utilized. Stress is real and it can kill you. I have been exploring holistic health the last few years, which literally is the focus of the body and caring for it as a WHOLE, mind, body, and soul. It’s all connected and it’s all so important. As a generation, we are overworked, overweight, underpaid, and under-socialized. We don’t take care of us until it’s too late. I have decided for the month of September to really focus on myself and making sure I am doing what is ok for me.

September for me, in the line of work I am in is STRESSFUL. My body takes a big hit. I don’t sleep enough, I eat too much crap, I don’t exercise enough, and I don’t take enough time for me, just to unwind. So in the effort to combat that this year, I am being proactive in my approach. I have about 9 days before things get crazy so I am making sure to enjoy all the downtime that I possibly can without any other undue stress.

I spent the holiday weekend with my dog in the peace and quiet of a friends condo. I loved it. I was in the city limits, and it took me out of my normal environment. I read some books, played the Sims (my fave), and worked on wedding stuff. I also watched some TV, worked out, cooked every night, drank all the wine I wanted. I explored the neighborhood, had Sunday brunch with some girlfriends, and journaled. It was just what I needed. I also caught up on working on this here blog 🙂

My fiancĂ© was out of town celebrating his bachelors weekend with all of his friends. Don’t get me wrong. I love my fiancĂ©. We live together, and he’s the best roomie and friend I could ever live with, even if I wasn’t marrying him, lol. But I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like a little time to themselves to do NOTHING. It’s just a good feeling. He gets it, and he was happy I was able to get the time to myself.

Here are a few things on my list to do this month to focus on my self-care and wellbeing. I plan on blogging about the outcome of some of them, or if I do anything particularly cool or out-of-the-ordinary.

Self-Care September Goals

  • Get a massage
  • Workout at least 20 times (cardio for 30 minutes in all workout sessions)
  • Start counseling
  • Visit a Reiki practitioner
  • Sage and Re-grid my home
  • Get rid of stuff that I’ve accumulated that no longer suite me and is a waste of space (donate!)
  • Meditate more often
  • Work on my flexibility and yoga techniques
  • Finish the book The Four Agreements
  • Finish my Real Estate course
  • Workout on my time-blocking scheduling technique and actually follow through.
  • Eat no junk or highly processed food
  • Get enough sleep
  • Ride my bike
  • Journal
  • Do positive affirmations and work on keeping a positive attitude
